UPM staff, students assist flood victims in Chenor, Pahang

By Azman Zakaria

CHENOR (Pahang), March 1 - About 100 volunteers comprising staff and students of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), local community, Sahabat Masjid, Kor SISPA UPM and the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Endowment (WAZAN), carried out an aid mission to help flood victims in Pesagi, Chenor, here.

In the mission which was carried out on last February 26, they also gave away food and financial assistance to 57 households in Kampung Pesagi Chenor which also covered a PPRT settlement, Kampung Machang Gelap, Kampung Sawah and Kampung Kandih which saw houses submerged in flood waters in last January.

The food items that were given away included rice, flour, milk, sardines and noodles.

Together, the volunteers also cleaned up those affected houses besides giving two houses inhabited by handicapped people affected by the floods, a new coat of paint.

One of the houses was inhabited by seven in a family, all of them handicapped, while another by a handicapped male senior citizen.

Head of Aid Mission, Zuhaimi Abdul Rahim said this was the second series of aid mission after the first one conducted on last January 21 where they extended their help to flood victims in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

He said the mission objective was in line with the’ ihsan’ concept promoted by UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr Aini Ideris, in coming to the rescue of the community.

Zuhaimi, who is also chairman of  Sahabat  Masjid UPM, said even though the flood had ended, the effects of flood which hit the areas last January still remained and could be felt by victims whose furniture was damaged and the walls of their house still bearing dirty, flood stains.

“Sahabat Masjid UPM is only carrying out what is entrusted of them in giving away the aid which we collected from members of the public who donated to the flood victim aid fund placed at UPM Mosque.

“So far, about RM15,000 have been used for the purpose of helping flood victims,” he added. - UPM
